This project will involve the replacement of all sidewalks on Main Street, the replacement of light poles, light fixtures, street furniture, and the installation of additional planting areas and street trees. We will likely be expanding the sidewalks in some areas to accommodate sidewalk dining. This project will also involve improvements to the stormwater system in downtown and possibly the replacement of the water line that runs under Main Street.
Status Updates
WithersRavenel has prepared initial drawings and these are under review by staff. We expect to have final engineered drawings completed by September 15, 2019.
Once we have received final drawings from the engineer, there are a number of steps before the project is completed. These are outlined below:
- Plans have to be presented to the Board of Commissioners, Main Street Coordinating Committee, and the community at large for review. The Board of Commissioners will have final say on approval of the plans.
- Plans will have to be approved by Duke Energy, CenturyLink, Spectrum, Surry Telephone and the NC DOT.
- Once plans have been approved by the Commissioners, NC DOT, and the utility companies we will begin the fundraising phase of the project.
- Once fundraising is complete or nearly complete, we will put the project out to bid.
- Bids will be received and evaluated and the Board of Commissioners will make an award of the contract for the construction of the project based on the engineer's recommendation.
- Construction will begin.
