Wastewater Treatment Plant

Plant Description:

The plant was constructed in 1984 and consists of an Influent Pump Station, Manual Bar Screen, Oxidation Ditch, Final Clarifiers, Chlorine Disinfection, De-Chlorination, Step Re-aeration, Aerated sludge holding unit. Sludge generated by the plant is processed thru our belt filter press for disposal in the Surry County Landfill.

The plant is a Grade III (1.5 MGD) Wastewater Treatment Facility currently operating as a Grade II (.500 MGD) facility due to low flow conditions. We wanted this lower rate so we could reduce our monitoring frequency thereby lowering our laboratory costs 60% as compared to Grade III frequencies. In the event we have an average annual flow of 90% of the .5 MGD rate (.45 MGD) we must send in a written request to the DWQ to operate under the 1.5 MGD /Grade III limits.

Operations:

The operators of the plant are responsible for operating the plant, preventative maintenance and general maintenance to equipment. The operators also take care of all buildings and grounds maintenance, operation of the plant’s State Certified Laboratory and submitting all necessary reports to NCDENR. In addition to the plant operations the operators are also responsible for checking the town’s 20 off site sewer lift stations on a daily basis including week-ends and holidays. The operators also read the bacteria test results at the Water Treatment Plant on Wednesday and Saturday each week.

Staff:

The plant is staffed by two State certified operators.

Mark King: 30 years of experience in the operation of wastewater plants and currently holds a Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Certification. In addition to Mark’s operators duties he also serves as back-up ORC of the plant.
